New Reviews... for those who care...

Ok, so I went and saw 40 Year Old Virgin and Brothers Grimm. Was hoping to see either Red Eye or Cave afterwards but the timing sucked and my sisters are going out to dinner to celebrate their b-day(s) so I left in order to join up. Now I am awaiting word on WHERE they plan to go.
Anywho, 40YOV was fun. Could've done with some streamlining much like Wedding Crashers needed. And some Farrelly brothers flicks. And some other comedies of late. Man, remember when 90 minutes was considered the MAX for a comedy? Anywho, this old couple in front of me were laughing their asses off... especially the woman. Now keep in mind the F-bomb is used constantly throughout the flick. So is several fun words for various parts of the body. Oddly, the only thing you really don't see in a movie about sex and loving women and their nice nethers is, well, NUDITY! What's up with that? An R rated movie and no tits? This is sacrilige!! A travesty!! Absolutely disgusting!! What has become of sex comedies? Granted, much of the theme of the movie is about treating sex with respect and not just doing it to do it and all that. That sex shouldn't define a person OR their relationship(s). But so what? I wanna see some boobies, dammit!!!!
Brothers Grimm... some nice fun moments. Some beautiful imagery. A lot of crappy effects shots. Terry Gilliam is like Sam Raimi or Robert Rodriguez... the QUALITY of the effect isn't as important as just having the effect. You hear other directors talk about having to cut a scene or aneffect cause they can't get it to work. Not THESE guys. If they want a scene of Spidey running down an alley, changing into his uniform, even if it looks shitty... he's gonna have it. An odd green screen effect of kids doing stunts or wire removal that looks fine for taking out wires... but the kids still look like they are ON wires? So what! Get the damn shot in the film! Really weak looking CGI bugs or moving cloth or a REALLY poorly rendered wolf? Works for Terry Gilliam! And it's a shame that such things really DO take you out of the film. Ok, it took ME out but still. It's a shame. Cause the movie is pure Gilliam. 12 Monkeys is a favorite of mine and I find little fault in it, really. But Time Bandits? Baron Munchausen? Fisher King? They all suffer from weak effects and being LONG. Or at least FEELING long. And it's weird. Cause Gilliam sure does love fairy tales and fantasy and fables and all that stuff. Now, I liked Burton's Sleepy Hollow... thought it was visually fun and exciting and, even though long, it moved FORWARD. It didn't feel like it STOPPED. There are times when Bros Grimm reminds me of that (not just the huge forest set) but it has moments where it just feels halted. Stopped. Like an intermission. And it's just another shame. Maybe it needed streamlining like 40YOV? Don't know. It ends well (unlike 40YOV) and you can forgive much of its excesses but overall it's just an "eh" movie.
The sad part of this all is that I will most likely buy both on DVD.
Yes, I'm sad.
But then, except for the virgin part, I know most of my friends will watch the 40 year old virgin and think "Hey, that's William!" But then, I also found myself saying "That's Oscar Goldman... he's worth more than Steve Austin!!" BEFORE it is said in the movie.
Those bastards!
Ok, off to dinner. TTYL.

So what happened on my birthday?

You mean besides this? http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3383139a11,00.html
Well, some friends met me up at Gators cause i wanted to try out their trivia with a team. I had played there the week prior with Jess and Kev but, well, we sucked. Only managed to get 6 points by the end of the first half and maxed out at 50 for the game. So I wanted to try it agian with an actual TEAM. Plus, it was an excuse just to get folks together. Even had a surprise guest, which was nice. Anywho, we DID do better in the first half... got SEVEN points. We did decently in the second half and were on target to eek out like 54 points by the end of the game but we didn't. But so what... still had fun. It was nice to catch up with people I don't see often or at all. Heard some disturbing tales, one of which threatened the good spirits I was feeling (thanks, Brooke!) but I stayed focusedd on the goal.
After trivia a few of us headed to Beedubs to use gift cards we had and drink some more. Which we did. And Julie bought me a choc cake there so I could have a b-day cake (thanks, Julie!) so that was mighty sweet. The act AND the cake. I headed home shortly after midnight, I think, and got some good rest.
So, yeah, it wasn't a party-party-party birthday but it was fun. Besides, I don't usually get into parties for ME. Don't mind going to someone else's or celebrating someone else's but for ME, I like a bunch of smaller gettogethers.
Anywho, I will update again soon, I hope, but for now... let THAT tide you over.
As always, please comment if you read this and have anything to add or ask.
Or just comment, I don't care. I like comments. They're fun!
Oh, and Team Trivia at Calico Jack's, Baymeadows, Saturdays at 7pm! Come out and bring your friends!! And I just got confirmed that I will be hosting trivia at BW3's in Orange Park on thursdays starting the first thursday after labor day, the 8th, I believe, so please support THAT one, too.
Take care all.

Movies

Ok, now I really don't see EVERY movie out... but I AM a movie fan and see a lot of movies. Here are some quickie reviews of the ones this summer... that are still out there. Some honorable mentions that didn't make this list are Longest Yard (ok for one viewing) and Madagascar (fun for the lemurs and the penguins). If you want to know about any particular movie or just want more info on some listed, comment and I will get to it.
Batman Begins
Good. Gets the Batman franchise back on track. I REALLY hate the “man in rubber suit” look but understand the reasoning enough to not let it ruin the movie completely for me. Good acting all around and I like Bale’s Batman. Al Ghul is such a great villain in the comics that it would be really difficult to do him justice but Neeson came pretty damn close. I just wish that once…just ONCE… they could actually make a Batman who is the world’s greatest detective. A brain-over-brawn type. Which is made all the more impressive since he also has the brawn.
Fantastic Four
Loved it. Complete and total fun at the movies. Doom was messed up but not beyond recognition like some of the bat villains have been BEFORE Begins. I liked Thing even if he wasn’t a huge, walking man-mountain. I enjoyed Sue and Johnny and thought Reed was damn near spot on. REALLY looking forward to the sequel.
Bad News Bears
Rent the original. The stuff they didn’t change was better there and the stuff they did change was worse than the original. A really pointless remake with nothing to offer. It wasn’t terrible (see Skeleton Key for that) but I am really glad I saw it for free.
Wedding Crashers
Funny. One of the best comedies this summer. Only gripe? Too long by about half an hour. And it was a plot half hour so it felt like It wasn’t a comedy anymore for a LONG time.
March of the Penguins
A marvelous film. Take the family. Take the siblings. Take a date. Hell, take your grandparents. It’s a wonderful film. Beautiful images and a heart warming story.
Sky High
Liked it bunches. Saw it twice and liked it the second time just as much. Only FF had that same distinction this summer. It’s a Disney high school movie with superheroes!!
Stealth
Looks good… special FX AND Beil. Plot was ok… decent enough twists for a summer actioner. Just wasn’t GREAT!
Island
I liked it. Saw it for free so that helped, probably. Really worth it for the stunts and for McGregor’s scenes with himself.
Devil’s Rejects
Didn’t go far enough. It needed to be MORE violent and MORE gory than anything else out there to justify its existence. It just wasn’t enough. Not when compared to the movies it is paying homage to.
Must Love Dogs
Cutesy lil romantic movie. Decent enough date movie, I guess, but could have been funnier and could’ve been more romantic. Harmless and forgettable.
Four Brothers
Not bad. Another throwback to the way they USED to make movies (like Devil’s Rejects) but this one manages to live up to the violence of the 70’s. Think Death Wish and Dirty Harry picks and you will get an idea for what they were going for. And it has some genuinely funny moments that come from character and not just cause the studios wanted it there. Yes, you can tell when such a thing happens.
Deuce Bigelow 2
Some laugh out loud and get tears in your eyes bits surrounded by jokes that just aren’t THAT funny. Cute plot and a nice message. Nothing unexpected, really.
Dukes Of Hazzard
Good stunts. Nice legs. Some nice bits of character interaction. And yet… it was still boring. Weird. Granted, the original TV show wasn’t exactly the best thing ever so really… this is a very respectable adaptation.
Skeleton Key
God, did this thing suck. It was horrible. Wanted to walk out within the first thirty minutes. Stayed for John Hurt. Period. I wanted my money back and I saw it free. Was thinking they should reimburse me for the snacks and the gas.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Cute enough, I guess, but the original was perfect and cannot be touched. End of story. Everyone I was with seemed to really like this movie and those unfamiliar with the original seemed to really like it. Not me. It was ok.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Lots of fun. Fun moments and exciting stunts and some really good chemistry on screen. Saw it twice, liked it twice. It just wasn’t as good that second time.
Lords of Dogtown
Impressive. I liked the documentary better but this was still fun. Worth a rental since not in theatres anymore.
Land of the Dead
Shows how to do zombie movies. One of his better budgeted flicks. I liked this one. Not perfect and I DO like Shaun of the Dead better but it was still pretty fun.
Star Wars Episode III
It satisfactorily ended the series. The homage to Frankenstein pissed off a lot of folks but I was ok with it. Not how any number of fanboys would’ve ended the franchise but it isn’t our right to do that. It was Lucas’ baby all the way through.
Bewitched
WTF?!?! It was ok. Not sure how it could be less than stellar with the cast and the concept but it managed to be.
War of the Worlds
The effects were amazing. Shame the rest couldn’t be the same. Overall, it was worth a viewing on the big screen. Why can’t Spielberg do sci-fi anymore? Can anyone tell me that?

Maybe we ALL need to learn how to hold back...

For example, every few weeks I talk with this one woman I went out with maybe twice last year. Got that? TWICE. After which she started to get upset with me if there was a week gone by I didn't make time for her. Now we hadn't made any confessions of love or anything. Not even confessions of "hey, you're pretty ok." Next thing I know, she's acting like we're seriously dating instead of just getting to know one another. I get a tad concerned, start to pull back, and EXPLAIN why and she responds with "It's cause you don't know me."
I give her the goold ol', "I know what I have seen so far and I ain't thrilled with where it's heading."
Anywho, that's the backstory.
We still talked a bit and played literati on yahoo messenger and such. But every few weeks we would chat. If she wasn't around for more than that I knew she found a new guy. And EVERY time it would go the same way. She meets the guy. They talk. He actually calls her again. They talk more. They hang out. They get physical WAY too soon cause she thinks knowing where he grew up and what types of food he likes means they know each other. She misses all the clues. She cooks dinner for the guy within the first 5 dates. Usually, it's within the first 3 or at least starts offering it then.
Now this is where I usually come in cause she just LOVES talking about the new guy she's found. I make a few comments trying to draw her attention to certain irregularities which always exist. Whether it's teh guy saying he can't get enough of her that she hasn't heard from in two weeks cause he's busy at work or the guy who is usually too tired for sex , she actually BELIEVES what they tell her and it's the next week when it finally hits her that something IS wrong. She swears off dating and men. She starts picking sarcasm fights with me and then disappears for a bit. Three to four weeks later, the cycle starts over. Oh, and she usually does something stupid in the meantime. Sleeping with someone else to get the guy mad or jealous even though he actually has to CONTACT her to find out... that one was my favorite.
Regardless, it's a cycle. A cycle she can't break.
And it is all her fault.
You can blame the guys for not appreciating here, sure, but SHE picks the guys.
You can blame the fear of loneliness for driving her to attach herself too quickly to the first guy to come along, but she should be smart enough to realize that by now. She is, btw... she has commented on it repeatedly.
All I know is, I often find myself suggesting:
Do NOT cook dinner within the first ten dates, nor even OFFER to do so. She can talk about her ability to cook but make the guy EARN that. (She offered to cook for me BEFORE the first date). This can also be anything you are good at. I am pretty decent at massages but I don't offer them on the first or second date.
Avoid jumping into anything sexual. Not just sex. ANYTHING sexual. Unless that is the point of the relationship, of course. I know women can be just like the cliched "Guy" and sometimes just want the nooky but at least ADMIT THAT. Even if only to yourself. And I lump massages into THIS part, too.
Watch for the signs that the guy is NOT interested. So many women like looking for the signs of interest that they miss the obvious bits that show the guy AIN'T all that into her. Same is true for women. Great, he asks questions... does he listen to the answers? Not talking about remembering. I have a weak memory for details... remember the STORY but lose some details. I am talking about LISTENING. Guys who want some play know how to do the "uh huh" and "Really?" and "Wow" bits pretty well. I don't know HOW often I hear "wow, no one has ever asked those types of questions" or "no one's ever told me that before". One woman actually was upset to learn that she really WAS too vague in her stories. No one had ever told her they didn't understand the story cause it was just a bit above "He went with her to this place and did that once." No lie... she included ONE name in that sentence and was surprised I didn't know what the hell she was talking about. Now, I am not trying to paint myself as this great person... I find myself at times involved with a story that isn't that interesting. I try to fight the urge to zone out but fail. Not often, but it happens. I try to let the person KNOW that, though.
Take some ME time. This is true even when not dating but becomes important when you are. It feels great to be in a relationship where you WANT to be around each other all the time. And it's even better when you CAN be around each other all the time without arguing even once. But let that develop over time. Don't try to force it. In the beginning, young people especially want to try to see each other a lot. This is called being horny. I'm sorry... you can call it "interest" or "infatuation" or "curiosity" but it really boils down to arousal. Sex is not a BAD thing in a relationship until it becomes the sole focus. Like how in the beginning sex is that thing you do AFTER the movie. The you start to say things like "We have an hour before the movie starts". Finally, you stop even planning on seeing the movie. This is great if that is the point of the relationship. But when one or both sides are believing it all to be a serious relationship with marriage potential, this can be a problem. Cause during that whole sexual phase, the relationship isn't growing. So if you are around each other all the time but not really doing anything to build the relationship to the point where it can sustain all this time, it will not survive. So read a book. Watch a show YOU like that the other person might not. Go for a drive on your own. Whatever hobby or interest you might have, go DO that. And don't count WORK as me time. That's just retarded.
Be Fair. This sounds easy but it isn't. It means be honest and open but don't be the ONLY one doing that. It means if you aren't serious about the relationship, tell the person. If you never expect to be, why waste time? If YOU can blatantly see that it won't work out, why not find someone it CAN work out with? I don't get it. Sure, if oyu are just in it for fun and stuff, that's fine. As long as the other person KNOWS this. Be fair to EVERYONE involved.
There are others, of course, but these are the ones relevant to the example I gave so I will stop here. Any comments?

Happy Birthday to Me!!!

Ok, so my b-day week has been off to a shitty start. I mentioned earlier that my sis hit my damn car and monday was the day to take it to the shop. But BEFORE all that happened... I had the lousy turn out at trivia on Saturday, managed to make it to Ichituknee on Sunday but the person I went with had to rush back in order to visit her ma in the hospital (was plannign to go with her sister) and on the way back, we get the info that her sis is going on her own...well, with her hubby...so there wasn't any reason to rush back. Ugh. Anywho, Monday I take my car to Viverettes Auto Body on Cassat Ave in Jax, FL. Nice place, friendly folk, no problem. Even has a Geico rep right there. Granted, you couldn't PAY me to have fricking Geico insurance but that's what my sister has so it was cool to have HER rep there for me to bitch at. But see, Enterprise was supposed to have a car waiting for me at 930. I was supposed to just drop off my car at 9, sign the paperwork and walk out and get into my rental. They weren't there at 930. They weren't there at 10. They weren't answering their phones. They were about a mile down the road. So the lady at Viverettes drives me down. I get there around 1010 and I can see from outside there is quite a few people there. Over 20. All of whom are waiting for cars. Seems 4 of their CSR's called out sick and the drivers were taking their sweet ass time coming back with cars so it was hard to figure out if they were just swamped or just stalling. Two hours later I finally get my car. Actually, that's 2 and a 1/2 hours later. That's right... TWO AND A HALF FRICKIN HOURS!!! My monday sucked. Then Tuesday I had tix to see a preview of Skeleton Key. Yippee, free stuff! I may write a review of this movie... still debating since I love movies and always thought I would write a bunch of reviews if I ever started a blog... might get around to doing one big one to cover all the movies but in the meantime I will sum up my feelings of Skeleton Key: It sucked. It really, really sucked. John Hurt was good, though. And it is always good to see Kate Hudson's nearly-nekkid self in a flick but that only gets a movie SO far. Anywho, so that meant Tuesday was a major letdown. Now we get to Wednesday. Went ok. Took time to go to a job fair and, as suggested, I brought a whole heaping helping of resumes. After going I wondered why I bothered. Either the companies at this so-called "Customer Service" job fair were not even LOOKING for customer service people or they just referred people to their website. TWICE I heard "you sound like exactly who we are looking for so go online and apply". I replied, "Can't YOU take my resume?" This ellicited the same response both times. "Sure, I can take your resume but you still need to go online and apply." WHY?!?!? What ever happened to sending someone to these things who can make a fricking decision??? I mean, you don't even really get a name to drop when you apply nor is their a place to actually drop it ANYWAY. So damned frustrating. Then I go to BW3's in Baymeadows for trivia since I am STILL the damn scorekeeper. This means I don't get to play but I DO get paid with a $25 gift card so I can eat and drink there. Yippee. ANYwho, it goes pretty smoothly but see, the problem is one person who is there. Not the guy who revealed some rather negative thoughts about my character. Not my friend who wasn't in the mood to drink and party for my b-day. And certainly not the guy who waited until 1020pm to tell me he was still in Daytona (the prick!). Nope. It was that woman from the Dominoes posting. And all I got was a lil "Oh, Hi". I mean, her roommate, who I met only once, stopped and talked to me longer. HER ROOMMATE! She was busy talking to some other guy. Not the married guy. Not one of her other friends. Some NEW guy. I know it's pointless and silly to be upset but... you know... argh...dammit sometimes you SHOULD get upset over silly things. Here's hoping my actual BIRTHDAY (08/11) can prove better. Not shaping up that way so far... but I like feeling hope. I will let you all know if it does.
In the meantime, if you read this thing please fricking COMMENT!!!
It makes me feel special.
Take care, everyone. I am taking my slightly buzzing self to bed now.

Yes, it's been awhile...shut up!

I've been busy.
Ok, not so much "busy" as just doing "other things". Time gets away from us all, right? I mean, one minute you are sitting on the couch flipping thru all the channels, thinking to yourself, "there aint SHIT on!" and the next you are trying to figure out why it is suddenly next tuesday. It's a very odd feeling. And I have had many, many things happen.
Let's see.
Did the usual Trivia Hosting thing on Saturday (Saturdays, 7pm at Calico Jacks in Baymeadows... bring friends) and tried out my friend, Jon's, new scoring program to see if it can work as is or needs more fixin. After a nearly heart-attack inducing incident near the end of the 2nd round, I made him take it away from me before I completely freakede. The job is SUPPOSED to be easy and fun... the stress that fucking thing was too much. Sure, I expected some problems going from handwriting the score to typing it in but I figured I do a lot on the computer so what would be the big deal, right? That was a tad stressful since that ain't the ONLY thing I have to do and certain issues with the set up of the program came to light. It was the fact that apparently there was an issue with certain aspects of the addition part of the program that it wasn't keeping an accurate running score that nearly made me kill myself or all those around me.
That's right. I said OR. I ain't gonna be one of those jerks who kills a bunch of people THEN themself. No sir. One or the other for ME!
Where was I?
Oh, right. So I get him to take it away and sure enough, it takes me another few questions to get back on track but since no team came up to tell me MY math was wrong, I think I did ok. Not many people played, as usual, but enough to seem like I had a job TO do. Plus, only one team got really drunk so that was nice. And no one complained about the music... which is actually quite odd for me. See, I like a LOT of different types of music. I PLAY a lot of different types of music. This means that usually SOMEONE makes a comment cause I am playing country. Or Rap. Or heavy metal. OR some band they don't like. I HAVE had many compliments on the variety, as well. And sometimes I play a song to give a hint. For example, that night I asked for the name of the movie in which Anthony Michael Hall played a character called "Farmer Ted" but is listed as only the "Geek" in the credits. I played Ringo Stars "You're Sixteen". See, the movie was Sixteen Candles. Get it?
Oh shut up. I need to do something to pass the time.
Anyway, that was interesting. Since my old "After Trivia" buddy wasn't there for the third straight week...most likely cause she is shacking up or something with that married guy (see "Dominoes" entry), I had no reason to stay at CJ's and I was pretty hungry. So I went to eat at BW3's across the street since I have gift cards there (a story for another post) and a friend, Jessica, came with. We ate, we drank, we talked about the people around us. It was fun. I had wanted to go to Ichituknee on Sunday but the weather didn't agree with me so I postponed it a week. Sunday was spent just vegging. Got up around 11. Watched some tv. Made plans with Jessica to go see Sky High and Bad News Bears. That was the deal since I had already seen Sky High (I liked it) but if Ias gonna pay to see a movie, I wanted to at least see something I hadn't seen ALSO. So we did the theatre hop thing. Friday I saw Sky High, March of the Penguins and Stealth. I liked the first two and the third was fun enough that I didn't get up and leave. Anyway, BEFORE the movie theatre we got cheap wings from Miami Subs and watched Top Secret... yes, I am a movie nut... since she hadn't seen it. I still giggle throughout that movie. AFTER the movie, she went home. Well, after we talked because her boyfriend called and said some shit that pissed her off so the car ride back to my apartment was filled with HER side of the conversation then her version of HIS side.
What fun.
(See "Dominoes" blog entry).
Anywho, Monday came and I went over to mama's to help out around her house. I was asked to install my sister's new dvd recorder with built in vhs side in the guest/cat room. It took me almost an hour to realize the damn machine was broken. A crack went right through the power button which ALSO happens to be the sensor for the remote. This meant that you couldn't turn it off and you couldn't use the remote. So it was pretty much useless. So my sister had to take it back. But they didn't have the box anymore (yay trash day) and they couldn't find the receipt. But my sis went anyway to see about returning it for a new one. Meanwhile, I decided since it was still sunshiny out that it would be a good time to go for a walk. So off I went on my walk while mama finished up what she was doing.
It was a good walk. About an hour. Felt good. So I come walking back up to mama's and I see her sitting on the ground. This is very unusual so I ask if she fell and she said yes and showed me her elbow. It was a nice, wet blood splotch. And she said she had hit her head a little. She has been getting better about the dizzy spells but she said she slipped in water so at least that's a good thing, I guess. I asked how long she had been down and she told me since about a quarter after by the wall clock. Which now read a quarter til. A half hour she sat on the ground. And now we had to figure out how to get her up. I went inside to grab the stoll... what the hell, she had already been down for 30 minutes. What's another one? I come out and that's when Wanda pulls back in, upset. They wouldn't take it back since it had been more than thirty days. Almost sixty, in fact. Then she sees mom on the ground (we get her up ok between the three of us) and asks, "Did William see it?" "See what?" Apparently, when she was backing out of the drive she thought a cat was running under the car so she swerved a bit to miss it... and hit my car. So NOW she was pissed that she had to call her insurance to get them to cover it but it will prove cheaper than paying for it herself but I have to drive around for a week with a nice dent in my front side panel. And she was pissed about alll the rest of her day, too, so she wasn't the most pleasant person around.
All in all... she had a suckier weekend than I did.
But still.
My damn car!!
ARRRGGHHH.
But, hey, my birthday is coming up. So maybe something good will happen!
